Shimla
Shimla is among the most famous hills stations in India situated in the north-west Himalayan region. It is a very popular holiday-retreat of India tourism which is visited in large number of tourists round the year. This hill station is spread over an 18 sq km of mountainous region at an altitude of 2,213 meters above sea level. It is a mesmerizing destination of incredible India tourism which has been blessed with all the natural bounties such as sublime greenery, snow capped mountains and surroundings of pine, deodar, oak and rhododendron forests. Apart from this natural blessing the Victorian style buildings epitomizes the beauty of this picture perfect town across the world. British named this city 'Queen of the hills' because of its salubrious climate and scenic vistas. Shimla is well connected by road to the plains. Facilities and amenities are good. People are friendly. It is also comparatively safer than other tourist destinations. All this makes it the favorite travel destination of tourists from India and across the world. An amazingly high percentage of tourists come back here again.
Besides being the ultimate summer retreat it remains an ideal spot for adventure sports. Tourists can go in for the various treks to the Kullu valley or indulge in trout fishing at the Pabbar River. The more adventurous may ski at the Narkanda and Kufri from January to mid-March. The nine-hole golf course at Naldehra is also a major draw for the tourists.
Places to see in Shimla
The Mall- The Mall, like most hill stations in North India, is the main shopping centre of Shimla. It also has many restaurants, clubs, banks, bars, Post Offices and tourist offices. The Gaiety Theatre is also situated there. People walk up and down the Mall slowly, stopping to gossip, as it is the main meeting place for everyone. The Ridge and Scandal point are the two main meeting points at the Mall.
Christ Church- Situated on the Ridge is Christ Church, which is the second oldest church in Northern India. It has a very majestic appearance and inside there are stained glass windows which represent faith, hope, charity, fortitude, patience and humility. Christ Church is a place all visitors should spend some time in.
Jakhu Hill- Jakhu Hill is the highest peak around 2 kms from Shimla and offers a beautiful view of the town and of the snow-covered Himalayas. At the top of the Hill, is an old temple of Hanuman, which is also the home of countless playful monkeys waiting to be fed by all visitors.
Shimla State Museum- At the outset, museum started with four galleries. Since then more galleries have been added. These galleries pertain to Pre- historic, Indian Archaeology, Woodcarvings, Himachal Archaeology, Pahari Miniature Paintings Monuments, Photographs, Rajasthan paintings, Bronzes, Numismatic, Arms Gallery, Gandhi Gallery, Philatelic, Anthropological, Contemporary Art & Wall Paintings gallery. In addition to these galleries museum has one exhibition hall for arranging the exhibition and other museum activities.
Shimla excursions-
There are many places to see near Shimla that are truly worth visiting:
Chail-The Chail hill station is located at an altitude of 2250 meters and is one of the smallest hill stations of Shimla.
Kasauli- The Kasauli hill station is situated at an altitude of 1927 meters above sea level and is a small hill station that still retains its colonial ambience of the 19th century.
KufriBreathtaking views, stunning locales and tranquil surroundings - this is what Kufri hill station is all about. Popularly known as Switzerland of the East, the spell binding beauty of Kufri hill station of Shimla will definitely enchant you.
Naldehra- Nestled between the beautiful lofty ranges of the Himalayas, lies the Naldehra hill station. The Naldehra hill resort near Shimla is no less than a picture perfect destination.
Kasauni- All mountain lovers desiring to get a closer look at the Himalayas should go to Kasauni, situated 51 kilometres north of Almora. It offers a superb view of Trishul (7120 m), Panchchuli or the Five Chimneys (6904 m) and the twin peaks of Nanda Devi (7816 m).
Narkanda The beautiful Narkanda hill station is situated at an altitude of around 2700 meters and offers a stunning view of the lofty ranges of Himalayas. Narkanda hill station is at a distance of 60 kilometers from Shimla.
Rampur- One of the biggest commercial centers of Shimla, Rampur town is located at a distance of around 135 kilometers from Shimla. It is one of the most important market and business centers of Shimla.
Renuka Lake- Renuka Lake in Shimla is a very famous tourist attraction. This beautiful lake is located at an altitude of 672 meters and lies in the Sirmaur district. The largest natural lake of Shimla, it is situated at the base of the Renuka hill station near Shimla.
Sarahan- The beautiful Sarahan city is located on the Shimla - Kinnaur border. It is situated at an altitude of 2165 meters. One of the most beautiful places to visit in India, Sarahan valley near Simla is the work of a perfectionist.
Tattapani- One of the most popular excursions from Shimla is the Tattapani hot springs. It is located at a distance of around 51 kilometers from Shimla. Located at an altitude of 656 meters, Tattapani hot springs near Shimla are a major tourist attraction.
Timber Trail- Timber Trail is a beautiful place that is located on the way to Shimla. It is located at an altitude of 5000 feet in the Shivalik range. The most famous thing about Timber Trail near Shimla is that two adjacent hills are connected together with a Cable and it offers cable car journey to tourists.
