Nainital
Nainital-The lake paradise, as it is popularly called is the jewel of Kumaon in Uttaranchal. Nainital with its gorgeous greens and the majestic mountains is clearly the most favored destination. Situated at an altitude of 1,938 meters the hill resort of Nainital offers several places of interest to the tourists. In Indian mythology, Nainital is considered one of the 64 'Shakti Peeths'. Legend has it that a grief stricken Lord Shiva was carrying Sati's decapitated body when one of her eyes fell here. The Nainital Lake is in the shape of an eye and the town derives its name from the combination of Nain (eye) and Tal (lake). Naini Jheel named after goddess Naina, is approximately two miles in circumference, and surrounded by mountains. The Naina Devi temple is located at one end of the lake. Naini, a word that almost brings the cool air, mesmerizing locales, snow-capped mountains and serene lakes with it is a secret hide out of the tourists each year. . Apart from being home to awe-inspiring beauty, the hill resort is also a preferred destination for adventure tourism - with the numerous options of yachting, kayaking, canoeing and boating, it offers. The beauty and adventure sports of the hill resort have contributed significantly to its travel & tourism industry.
Sightseeing Highlights:
The Lake Area- The Mallital area, which falls in the northern part of the lake, is where the High Court building is located. Here is where you'll find the flats, the Tibetan Market and the BarraBazaar, the Eco Cave Gardens and several top end hotels.
Naina Devi Temple- To the north of the lake is the small Naina Devi Temple, one of India's venerable 64 Shaktipeeths. The pathway to the temple, edging the lakeside is a verdant trail. The lake is said to have sprung from the eye of the Goddess Parvati which legend has it fell here when the grief-stricken Lord Shiva broke into his cosmic tandava dance of destruction with his dead consort in his arms.
Boat House Club- Honeymooners and holidaying families can be found enjoying boat rides on the tranquil lake. To get a ride get there early when the sun is low and the crowds thinner. The Boat House Club was built in the mid-19th century. You can enjoy a drink at the lake-facing bar or a game of billiards with a nominal fee as a temporary member.
The flats-In close proximity to the Naina Devi Temple and the lake, the flattened ground created as a result of a landslip, is a popular venue for local football matches and other sports. Part of it is also a large car park. In the summer the holiday crowd fills up the place as they come to enjoy the breeze, and try out the snack stalls. A bazaar also springs up here selling local handicrafts such as shawls, blankets, candles, decorative items and tweeds. The Tibetan market along the edge of the lake is very popular and a permanent feature.
Nainital Zoo- This is a perfect place for a family outing. The kids and the grownups are equally fascinated by the snow leopard and Himalayan Black bear housed here among other species. The zoo also has several species of birds.
Eco Cave Gardens-A hot favorite with children, it's an excellent way to introduce them to eco-friendly living. The six caves here bring out the explorer in the kids and their high-spirited laughter rewards you for its novel approach to adventure in the hills. Not for the claustrophobic though. The musical fountain operates during the high season.
Snow View- Take the aerial ropeway to savour that glorious view of Nainital's verdant environs from Snow View (7,448 ft) on Sher-ka-Danda Hill.
China Peak- An old trekking favourite China Peak (8,579 ft) too has panoramic views of the Nainital and the distant snow-covered Himalayas. Hire a pony to get here if you're not much of a trekker.
Tourist Attraction around Nainital
Situated in the rich farm belt of Terai, on the southeastern fringes of the great forests, the busy market town of Ramnagar is the main administrative centre for Corbett National Park and Project Tiger. Ramnagar makes a fishing base camp. Most resorts arrange all inclusive fishing trips.
Almora- The hill station of Almora, located in the Kumaon hills, has fascinated travelers from all over the world. It is among the very few hill stations not developed by the English. Placed over a picturesque horseshoe-shaped ridge, some of the major attractions of Almora are G. B. Pant Museum, Kasar Devi Temple, Chitai Temple and Udyotchandesvar Temple (also Nanda Devi Temple).
Corbett National Park Set up in 1936, the Corbett National Park is India’s first national park. The park is situated mainly along the valley of the Ramganga River. The river swarms with gharial, mugger, mahseer and flocks of cormorants. Apart from tigers (90 in number in 1984), leopards, jungle cats, fishing cats, sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, jackal, yellow-throated marten, dhole, Himalayan palm civet, Indian grey mongoose, common otter, porcupine, and black-naped hare are found all over the park. Elephants can be seen in the park.
Kasauni- All mountain lovers desiring to get a closer look at the Himalayas should go to Kasauni, situated 51 kilometres north of Almora. It offers a superb view of Trishul (7120 m), Panchchuli or the Five Chimneys (6904 m) and the twin peaks of Nanda Devi (7816 m).
Mukteshwar- Set atop a high ridge 51 km from Nainital, is Mukteshwar one of Kumaon’s beautiful resorts. The resort is jam-packed with fruit orchards and dense coniferous forests. It offers a fine view of the majestic Himalayas as well as of Almora. Mukteshwar is also houses the famous Indian Veterinary Research Institute.
Ranikhet- Situated at 103 km from Dhikala, Ranikhet is a beautiful and peaceful hill station located at an altitude of 2,000 metres above sea level. The climate is pleasant with mild summers and chilled winter. This is among the few unexplored destinations offering serene environment, traffic-less streets, and hospitable people.
SatTal -
Situated 21 kms from Nainital, Sat Tal is one of the most scenic resorts of Kumaon. The resort gets its name from the seven interconnected lakes.
