Mussoorie
Mussoorie also known as the “the queen of hill stations”, is situated in the Garhwal hills, 35 kms ahead of Dehradun at an altitude of 6,500 feet above sea-level. Mussoorie, with its green hills and varied flora & fauna, is a fascinating hill resort. The pine-covered slopes of the hill resort, combined with the exquisite views of the surrounding snow-clad mountains, make it one of the popular weekend getaways in North India. Towering at an altitude of around 2500 m above sea level, the hill resort seems dotted with modern bungalows, malls and manicured gardens. Mother Nature has blessed Mussoorie with captivating beauty and it is one of the major contributors to the travel & tourism industry of the state. Mussoorie is famous for its scenic beauty, gay social life and entertainment. The excellent climate makes it an attractive holiday resort. Thronged by tourists, it vibrates with gaiety and merry making during the summer season. There are no steep inclines and the more adventurous can undertake enjoyable excursions to various beauty spots in the vicinity. Mussoorie affords glorious views of the mighty Himalayan peaks. It provides all kinds of amusement and every facility for domestic and foreign tourists. Mussoorie is conveniently connected by road to Delhi and other major cities and is the "Gateway" to Yamunotri and Gangotri shrines of Northern India.
Sightseeing Highlights:
Camel's Back Road-This is a 3 km stretch which begins from Kulri Bazaar and ends at the Library Bazaar. The road is named after the Camel rock with a life like resemblance and can be seen from Mussoorie Public School. British graveyard having ancient graves on the way provides new dimension to the walk. Horse riding and walking during evening is a memorable experience as it offers a sunset view in the Himalayas.
Kempty Fall-This is the biggest waterfall and one of the most popular tourist spots of Mussoorie. . It has a distinction of being the biggest and prettiest waterfall located in a beautiful valley and is surrounded by high mountains If you visit during the summer, this is one place you simply have to go to because what can be better than going into a refreshingly cool waterfall on a hot summer day? At an altitude of 1,370 meters, the Kempty Falls are 15 kms from Mussoorie on the way to Yamunotri. The waterfall is located in a valley and the surrounding mountains provide not only a picturesque background but a feeling of being cocooned in the mountains.
Lake Mist- - This is a newly developed tourist spot, which provides hotels and restaurants. It is a good picnic spot and has boating facilities available on the beautiful lake. Fairly close to Mussoorie, it comes 5 kms before the Kempty Falls on the Mussoorie-Kempty Road.
Company Garden-This is one of the most popular picnic spots in Mussoorie, at a distance of 4 kms, which can be reached either on foot or by car. It has a beautiful garden, an artificial lake with boating facilities and several restaurants and curio shops. The Ferris wheel here is a favorite with visitors, as are the photo galleries which rent out traditional costumes for visitors to pose in.
Mussoorie Lake-Another newly developed tourist project, the Mussoorie Lake boasts of a spectacular view of the Doon Valley and the several small villages on the mountainside on the way to Mussoorie. It has a lake with boating facilities and is 6 kms away on the Mussoorie-Dehradun highway.
Bhatta Falls-Smaller than the Kempty Falls and with fewer visitors, the Bhatta Falls is nonetheless equally beautiful. On occasions, it is a better option than the Kempty Falls which can get too crowded. So if crowded places are not your thing but you still don’t want to miss out on a waterfall, this is just the place for you. It is 7 kms from Mussoorie on the Mussoorie-Dehradun Road. Bhatta Village can be reached by car or bus and then it’s a 3 km stretch on foot to the fall.
Cloud's End- Cloud's End was a bungalow built by an Englishman in the 1830s, one of the first four buildings of Mussoorie. It is located at the edge of a cliff, with a sheer drop which gives the house an impression of being at the end of the clouds, hence the name. The bungalow has been converted into a hotel called Cloud's End and is one of the heritage hotels of the town. The resort is located at the western end of Mussoorie, 8 kms from the Library, surrounded by dense forests. It also commands an impressive view of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks and the Yamuna river flowing through the Doon Valley.
Nag devta temple- An ancient temple dedicated to Snake God Lord Shiva and is situated on Cart Mackenjee road is about 6 kms from Mussoorie on way to Dehradun. Vehicles can go right upto the temple. Place provides an enchanting view of Mussoorie & Doon valley.
Jwalaji temple(Benog hill)- Situated at an altitude of 2104 ms is 9 Kms west of Mussoorie. It is situated on the top of the Benog Hill surrounded by thick forest having an old ideal of Goddess Durga provides a marvelous view of Yamuna Valley.
Mussoorie (Excursion)/Weekend Getaways around Mussoorie
Dehradun- Dehradun is just 40 kms from Mussoorie. Dehradun is one of the old cities of India. Also known as the 'Abode of Sage Drona,' Dehradun has always been an important center of Garhwal ruler, which was conquered by the British. The headquarters of many National Institutes like ONGC, Survey of India, IIP, etc. are located in the city.
Rishikesh- Around 85 kms away from Mussoorie, Rishikesh is known as the Tapo Bhumi or the place for meditation of the Gods. Rishikesh is one of the popular pilgrimages for the Hindus. At this place the Ganges leaves the mountains and prepares herself to begin a long journey through the plains.
Haridwar- Around 100 kms away, located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Haridwar represents the point where the holy river Ganges reaches the plains. Temples and ashrams dotting this town create the ambience of a totally different world.
Nag Tibba- 55 kms from Mussoorie is very good place for trekking. Nag Tibba, as it is called, is the highest place around Mussoorie. It is surrounded by thick dense forests. The actual trekking for Nag Tibba starts some 21 kms away from the place.
Sahastra Dhara- Located 54 kms from Mussoorie is the famous picnic spot called as the Sahastra Dhara. Noted for their astounding beauty the medicinal sulphur waterfalls are a great attraction.
Dhanaulti- On Mussoorie-Tehri Road 25km away, it has deodar forests and mountainscapes.
Surkhanda Devi- Perched on a peak, the temple demands a stiff two-km climb from devotees. The temple, goes the legend, was built on the site where the head of Shiva's consort (Shiva is the destroyer in the Hindu trinity) fell after it was chopped off to stop Shiva's terrifying dance of death that was shaking the universe to its very core.

Hand pulled rickshaws, taxis and cars are not allowed on the Mall, but can move in other parts of Mussoorie.

In summer, light woolens are advisable while heavy woolens are a necessity during winter. The summer season extends from April to June. The winter season is from September to December.
