Manali

Manali --"the Switzerland of India" stands high at an altitude of 2050 meters above sea level, and is located 550 km away from the national capital and 280 km north of the state capital Shimla. Far away from the scorching heats of the plains in the veritable “valley of the Gods” Manali offers solace, comfort and rejuvenation to the sun soaked souls Manali offers stunning views of the snow-capped mountain peaks, and wooded slopes not to mention grassy meadows, besides crystal clear waters of the foaming and somewhat bouncy Beas River which literally flows through the town adding to the beauty of the landscape. Home of the Great Manu Maharishi, Manali is one of the favorite destinations for the adventure sport lovers and nature enthusiasts who visit the place for several reasons that include, among others, to enjoy thrilling white water rafting, rock climbing, trekking, and skiing. The beauty of the resort is enhanced by the Beas that flows through it. The river with the wild flowers, hamlets and fruit-laden orchards present the gifts of the sight, sound and smell.The many shops in the markets of Manali sell fantastic Kashmiri, Nepali and Tibetan shawls, carpets, woolens, and handicrafts which could be bought to take back home as wonderful gifts and souvenirs.

Places to visit in and around Manali

Rohtang Pass- At an altitude of 13,050 feet above sea level, is another adventure tourist site where it can be cold even on a summer day. It is the highest point on the Manali-Keylong road and provides a wide panoramic view of mountains rising far above clouds, which is truly breath taking. Close by is a small lake called Dassaur Lake. Beas Kund, the source of river Beas, is also nearby. In winter, the road of Rothang Pass is closed.

Rahala waterfalls- About 16 km from Manali at the start of the climb to the Rohtang Pass, are the beautiful Rahalla Falls at an altitude of 2,501 m.

Monasteries- Manali is known for its shiny gompas or Buddhist monasteries. It is maintained by donations from the local community and by sale of hand-woven carpets in the temple workshop.

Rani Nala- Around 46 km from Manali, it is the glacier point where snow is available throughout the year.

Vashist Hot Water Springs and Temple- Around 3 km from Manali, across the Beas river is Vashist, a small village with natural sulphur springs.

Hadimba Devi Temple- Built in 1553 and with a superbly crafted four tiered pagoda roof. It is famous for its exquisitely carved doorway.

Manu Temple- This is dedicated to the sage Manu.

Jagatsukh- (6km) The one time capital of Kullu. Here are old temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and to Sandhya Gayatri. The Arjun caves are just ahead.

Solang Valley- (l4km) In a picturesque setting, this has good ski slopes end picnic spots. It has the glacier closest to Manali. Solang Nullah, 13 km northwest of Manali, is famous for its 300-meter ski lift. It is a picturesque spot and offers splendid views of glaciers and the snow-capped mountains.

Triloknath- Located in the Pattan Valley, its an important pilgrimage centre.

Udaypur- An important pilgrimage place in the Pattan Valley.

Club House- The club House with its comprehensive facilities that includes roller skating ring, an auditorium, a billiards room, a library, a bar and a restaurants, makes a wonderful outing for the day.

Vashisth Baths- One of Manali's main attractions is a place to luxuriate in Himachal Tourism's baths where the water of hot sulphur springs renowned for their medicinal qualities has been piped into baths.

Getting There

Air: Manali has no airport of its own. The nearest one Bhuntar is around 10 km south of Kullu town and about 50 km from Manali. Flights are available to and from Lucknow, Delhi, Ludhiana and Shimla.
Road: The entire Kullu Valley is connected with various centres both inside and outside the state. Other than HPTDC, a fleet of buses is run by road transport corporations and private operators.

Best time to visit

The climate of Manali is very cold as it is located in the Himalayas and the snow line is not far from the place. The altitude of Manali gives it a climate, which is loved by one and all. The summers are cool and the winters prove to be very harsh. During the winters the snow line comes down and there is snowfall in the region and heavy woolen clothes are required. During the monsoon months due to heavy rainfall there are landslides, which hamper movement. The best time to visit Manali is May and October but one can visit this place during winters too.
