Dehradun

Perched in the cradle made by the Himalayan foothills to the north and the Shiva range to the south, Dehradun is that charming valley where you can tell the season by looking at the flowers in your garden. The city is said to have derived its name from the two words ‘dehra’ and ‘dun’. Dehra is apparently derived from ‘dera’ meaning camp and ‘dun’ means the low lying lands at the foot of the mountain. Dehradun, also known as Doon valley is the capital city of the North Indian state of Uttarakhand. Dehradun full of adventure, spiritualism and tranquility is an entry point for all the trekkers and mountaineers onto their journey into the Garhwal Himalayas. Two rivers, Ganga and Yamuna, flow to the east and west of Dehradun, respectively. Dehradun attracts tourists for its pleasant weather and beautiful landscape. It is also the getway to the surrounding Himalayan regions like Nainital, Mussoorie, Auli as well as Haridwar and Rishikesh. The city is also home to some renowned educational and research institutes like the Doon School, Indian Military Academy, Forest Research Institute, Wildlife Institute of India, etc.

Dehradun has a temperate climate. The summers are generally hot while winters can be cold. Snowfall is not uncommon in the winter months. Depending on the altitude, the climate varies from place to place within the district. Dehradun can be visited throughout the year. However, in the month of January there are chances of heavy snowfall.

By Train- Dehradun is well linked to all the major cities of the state by trains. There are direct daily trains that come here from Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai, Varanasi, Lucknow and other places. The most notable ones are Shatabdi Express, Mussoorie Express and the Doon Express.

By Road- Well connected by good and smooth roads and there are daily bus services that connect Dehra Dun to Mussoorie and Delhi.

Places to visit

Forest Research Institute- Established by the British in the early years of this century, the Institute is one of the finest of its kind in the world. Across the six galleries of its Museum are laid out some of the best collections of specimens of flora and fauna.

Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology- This is another place of interest worth a visit. A museum containing rock samples, semiprecious stones and fossils is the center of attraction here.

Tapkeshwar Temple- Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is beside a stream, which is directed to flow onto the lingam. During Shivratri, a large fair is held here.

Robber's Cave Robber's Cave: this place offers splendid view of the surrounding mountains. The natural cave formations and gentle streams are very popular among the tourists.

apovan- This scenic place is believed to be the ashram of Guru Dronacharya, arms teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravs in Mahabharata.

Sahasradhara- This place is famous for the hot springs that are believed to have miraculous effects on many diseases.

Rajaji National Park- This National Park is home to many important species of animals, birds and plants. The elephant population of the park is the main attraction. The park contains two more sanctuaries. it is one of the major tourist spots near Dehradun, situated just 23 kilometers away from the city.

Malsi Deer Park- This refuge for deer is a beautiful forest and is very popular as a picnic spot.

Dakpatthar This place is noted for the magnificent scenic beauty surrounding it. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Dehradun.

The Central Braille Press This institution is the largest producer of textbooks in Braille in India. A visit to this institute is a very interesting and informative experience.
Also nearby towns of Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Mussoorie are very popular tourist spots near Dehradun.

Dehradun - Fairs and Festivals

Jhanda Fair- This fair marks the arrival of Guru Ram Rai, the Sikh Guru, at Dehradun. In the year 1699, Guru Ram Rai built a Gurudwara, Guru Ram Rai Darbar and hoisted his flag. Till this day a large fair is held here every year in the month of March/April on the sixth day after Holi and a flag (Jhanda) unfurled at Jhanda Chowk.

Tapkeshwar Fair- The Tapkeshwar temple of Dehradun celebrates the Shivratri fair with much fervor. Devotees of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati throng the Tapkeshwar Temple during the annual Shivratri fair.

Lakhawar Fair This fair held at Lakhawar village, during September-October, is very popular in the neighboring area of Chakrata, 78 km from Mussoorie. The fair reflects the customs and traditions of Garhwali tribes. Dance, music, and sports competitions mark the celebrations of the fairs in Dehradun.
